TL;DR:
Sync issues are most likely caused by dynamic ad insertion (DAI)
DAI affects all podcast apps
We have a solution for podcasts published after October 2022
Older podcasts may still experience occasional misalignment
Reason 1: Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI)
DAI is the most common cause of sync issues. Podcasts use DAI to insert different ads each time an episode is downloaded. This means the audio you hear might have ads that weren't present when we initially created the transcript. For podcasts released after October 2022, we've developed a solution that automatically re-syncs the transcript to match the audio. However, for older podcasts, you may still encounter occasional misalignment due to DAI. We are planning to re-process popular old episodes in order to solve this issue.
Reason 2: Variable Bitrate (VBR) Encoding
A small number of podcasts use VBR encoding for their audio files. VBR helps making MP3 files small. But with VBR you effectively cannot go to a specific timestamp because the bitrate can vary any time. This can cause the transcript to become misaligned when you skip around in the episode or jump to different chapters. Unfortunately, VBR-related sync issues are difficult to solve completely and affect all podcast apps, not just Snipd. When we detect that a podcast uses VBR encoding, we display a warning on the transcript view to alert you to potential syncing problems.
